Chapter seven

Chapter 7: Trials of the Wood

Jason stood at the fork in the path, eyeing the two diverging routes. One led to the Wild Marrow Flowers, the other to the Fire Fruits. Samantha's eyes gleamed with anticipation as she gazed down the Fire Fruit path.

"The left one leads to the Fire Fruit. One of our comrades stumbled upon it a few months ago and saw a Fire Fruit growing inside a cave. Your friend might be destined to get it," Hau Ta said, munching on a piece of half-roasted meat. Its smell permeated the air, and Jason didn't like it. Couldn't this man have roasted it more?

"How confident are you about the Wild Marrow Flower seed on the other path?" Jason asked. After fighting with Hau Ta, he had learned the brute was soft at heart. He was doing a fair trade with all the rogue Elementals. He played fair and honest.

"I've only heard rumors. The trials these paths present are different for different people. They are never the same. And the paths only show these things to the destined ones. As a human, you might not get anything. It's best to let your Elemental try out the Fire Fruit," Hau Ta said.

"I can feel it, Jason. Those fruits might be my key to breakthrough," Sam said, staring at the rocky path that lead to the Fire Fruit.

Myra glanced at the shimmering water path branching off to the side. "I'll take that route. But you two should go for the Wild Marrow Flowers."

Jason nodded. Myra joined them in the hope of treasure and that she might have some destiny with the path she chose. As per Hau Ta, every path could lead to their destined outcome.

"You want to go on the fire path? I'll head to the Wild Marrow Flower seed." Jason turned to Myra.

"No. We will first find the Wild Marrow Flower seeds. My Fire Fruit can wait," Sam said.

Jason nodded. Sam cared most about Li Wuan, and it wasn't shocking to see her choosing Li Wuan over her own benefit.

"Let's do that." With a determined stride, Jason set off down the Wild Marrow Flower path. Samantha followed close behind, casting one last longing look at the Fire Fruit route.

The forest around them blurred and shifted. In the blink of an eye, Jason found himself alone in a strange new world. Gone were the towering trees and tangled undergrowth. Instead, he stood in a vast, empty plain stretching as far as the eye could see.

Three white balls of energy floated out of a stone archway, arriving in front of them.

Jason glanced at Sam questioningly, but she had no answer.

"Hau Ta said each trial is different, so this might be different as well," Sam muttered.

Jason touched the first energy ball, receiving instant knowledge of the trial ahead. He understood that pouring his wood qi into the ball would transport him to the actual challenge.

Trial of Fire: Seek your fire destiny in the path.

Frowning, Jason pulled his hand back and touched the second ball of energy.
